Furikake/Ochazuke
Furikake is a Japanese seasoning blend typically used to sprinkle over rice, but it can also be added to noodles, soups, or vegetables. It usually contains ingredients like dried seaweed, sesame seeds, salt, sugar, bonito flakes, and sometimes dried fish or egg. Furikake adds a savory, umami-rich flavor with a balance of salty, sweet, and crunchy textures, making it a versatile and easy way to enhance everyday meals. It is especially popular as a topping for steamed rice and onigiri (rice balls).
Ochazuke, on the other hand, is a traditional Japanese dish where green tea or broth is poured over a bowl of plain rice, often topped with various ingredients like pickles, nori (seaweed), and grilled fish. Furikake is commonly sprinkled on top of ochazuke to add extra flavor, texture, and umami. This simple, comforting dish is often enjoyed as a light meal or snack, particularly as a remedy for when you're feeling under the weather or after a long day.
